ToLLA (SFW) Devlog #2: Role-Playing & Protagonist Archetypes

Hi, and welcome to another devlog! :)

In this one we'll be talking about role-playing opportunities realized through the protagonist's archetypes!

Archetypes are basically self-contained, role-playing bundles that encapsulate certain aspects of the protagonist's psyche. Put simply, they let you decide what kind of Captain Hale you want to play as! The Captain has a certain amount of preset backstory to him (1st Company Captain in Fort Ninevus, war hero, ladies' man, minor local celebrity, relationship with Meredith), but apart from that he's a blank slate, and you can (role)play him any way you like!

From the pic at the post's header, you have: 

  • Crusader: a virtuous, self-impoverished ascetic who refuses material rewards and martyrs himself for others, serving as a tireless exemplar!
  • Soldier: a dutiful, pragmatic patriot, whose experienced demeanor marks him as a leader of men, and a cunning strategist beloved by his followers!
  • Mercenary: an amoral and contract-oriented sellsword working as an enforcer for the right amount of coin, regardless who's paiyng... or what for!
  • Trickster: a charmingly aloof and suave prankster, whose irreverent attitude allows him to effortlessly bamboozle his marks out of their own wealth!
  • Diplomat: a clinically rational and nigh-apathetic pacifist, who often acts in a conciliatory manner, preferring to observe as a neutral bystander!
  • Broker: a shrewd merchant always on the lookout for a good deal, who's keen on finding ways to make profit from any situation no matter the odds!
  • Drunkard: an unrepentant alcoholic whose habitual abuse of liquor dominates his decision-making and relationships, often to his personal detriment!
  • Lecher: a spiteful, envious, paranoid, and deceitful sex-crazed pervert, whose lecherous advances rest on abusing the power of his rank and station!
  • Madman: a seductively depraved corruptor, whose broken, traumatized mind hides its violent impulses behind a facade of elitism and sophistication!
  • Warlord: an avaricious, ruthless, frighteningly-intelligent authoritarian, who relies on bending the letter of the law to terrorize and enslave his foes!


There's nothing stopping you, as the Player, from deviating from a set path and picking a 'Crusader' option in one conversation, then opting for a 'Madman' choice in another. These role-playing replies aren't set in stone, nor will the game force you to choose one to the exclusion of others; pick whatever you like, at whichever time you want to! In-game, they're sometimes labeled as above, but other times exist more in the form of a loose grouping of dialogue choices which you can mix-and-match at your convenience. They're a useful way for us to write Captain Hale's responses, and organize his replies around a set of archetypal themes - hence, the term 'archetypes'!

Obviously not all archetypes will be present in every single conversation, and some dialogues might lean more towards specific ones (depending on the context), but the Player will for the most part have a healthy amount of choices even in the smallest and most trivial of encounters!

These unique dialogue choices are one of the many ways you'll be able to shape the world of ToLLA... and your place within it!
